Caption: Fossil fish scales. Fossil scales of a lungfish. The line across the centre is the fish's lateral line. This species, Dipterus valenciennesi, lived during the Devonian era - 408-360 million years ago. Lungfish are amphibian-like, air-breathing fish, thought to be the ancestors of terrestrial vertebrates. They were common during the Devonian but only six species exist today. This fossil was found in Scotland. Magnification x1 at 35mm size.
