Caption: Fossil fish bone. Polarised light micrograph of a section through bone from a fossil of an Asterolepis ornata fish. This was a bony-headed fish that lived during the Devonian period (408- 360 million years ago). This bone is similar to modern bone, with large Haversian canals (black circles) surrounded by smaller lacunae (black dots). Magnification: x30 at 4x5 inch size.
