Caption: Fossil Proconsul primate skull. Skull of the primate Proconsul africanus, an ape-like mammal that lived between around 23-15 million years ago. It is thought to be an ancestor of humans. This specimen has been dated at 18 million years old. It is thought that modern humans, which appeared around 250,000 years ago, evolved from animals like Proconsul. Study of fossils such as this improves the understanding of human evolution.
