Caption: Elephant bird egg. The elephant bird (Aepyornis maximus) is the largest bird to have inhabited the Earth. It was a ratite related to the the ostrich and the kiwi. The elephant bird was a native of Madagascar and is believed to have become extinct following the colonisation of the island by human beings. The egg is the largest known specimen to exist and possesses a larger volume than the eggs of most non-avian dinosaurs.
