Caption: Skate fossil. Rock containing a fossil (brown areas) of a skate, a cartilaginous flat fish that is related to the rays and sharks. The tail is at right, and the head is at left. Radiating spines of cartilage support the 'wings' on either side. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. The cartilaginous fish first appeared some 450 million years ago.
