Caption: Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil (brown) of a Dapalis macrurus fish. The tail is at right, and the head is at left, and the skeleton and fins are clearly seen. This extinct fish was found in rocks dating from the Miocene epoch (23 to 5 million years ago). Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved.
