Caption: Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil of a Priscacara sp. fish. This extinct fish was found in rocks dating from the Eocene epoch (55 to 38 million years ago). Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This fossil was found in the Wyoming part of the Green River Formation, USA, an area that is rich in fossils.
