Caption: Fossilised fish in a slab of sediment. These fish belong to the extinct genus Diplomystus, related to modern-day herrings and sardines. They lived during the Eocene era, from 56 to 34 million years ago. The presence of so many fossils in the same slab of sediment suggests these fish were killed in a catastrophic geological event.
