Caption: Ichthyosaur. Fossilised paddle from an ichthyosaur, a type of marine reptile. The tip of the paddle is at left. The paddle consists of limb bones which have fused together. There were several different species of ichthyosaur. They lived from about 240 million years ago until becoming extinct, along with the dinosaurs, about 65 million years ago. The ichthyosaurs resembled dolphins, having streamlined bodies, a long snout, powerful tail and large eyes. Ichthyosaurs probably ate fish. They lived entirely in the water and gave birth to live young.
