Caption: Tyrannosaurus rex skull. Fossilised skull of a Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur. This species lived in North America and Asia between about 70 million years ago and the mass extinction of the dinosaurs some 5 million years later. Its teeth measured around 15 centimetres long, and were used for holding and tearing flesh. The head is heavily built, probably to allow it to withstand its impact with a prey animal. T. rex is thought to have been a scavenger as well as an active hunter. One of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, T. rex measured 6 metres in height and weighed up to 7 tonnes. Photographed in the Denver Museum of Natural History, USA.
