Tyrannosaurus rex. Artwork of a Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur. This species lived in North America and Asia between about 70 million years ago and the mass extinction of the dinosaurs some 5 million years later. The head is heavily built, probably to allow it to withstand its impact with a prey animal. It is not known what purpose its relatively puny arms had. T. rex is thought to have been a scavenger as well as an active hunter. One of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, T. rex measured 6 metres in height and weighed up to 7 tonnes.
