Caption: Triceratops dinosaur movement. Sequenced computer models showing a walking skeleton of a Triceratops dinosaur. These were produced for the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC, USA. Its Triceratops fossil skeleton, the first in the world, had to be disassembled to preserve it after nearly 100 years of display. The bone shapes and skeletal posture were digitally scanned. This 3-dimensional data was used to digitally rebuild the skeleton, ensure proper joint articulation and test theories on dinosaur locomotion. The data was also used to aid the construction of the replica cast that replaced the original from May 2001.
