Dinosaur bones. Computer artwork of dinosaur bones revealed by melting ice. The dinosaurs evolved in the Triassic Period (from 250 to 210 million years ago) and dominated life on Earth for more than 150 million years. They went extinct 65 million years ago, probably due to a large asteroid impact. They are known today only by the fossilized remains of their bones. Dinosaurs were reptiles and lived on the land. There was no major glaciation (increased ice cover) during the time of the dinosaurs, but continental drift can explain findings of tropical animal fossils in the polar regions.
