Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of the wood of the hemlock tree Tsuga canadensis, showing annual growth rings. The four bright bands running diagonally from top right to bottom left correspond to four years of growth in the tree's life. Early in the growing season (spring) the cells are widely spaced, as seen in the top left of this picture. As autumn approaches the cells bunch together to form the thick red band. At the start of the following growing season this pattern is repeated. The darker bands running at right angles to the annual rings are a system of horizontal xylem cells called 'rays', which distribute water. Magnification x150 at 35mm size. Microcosmos P.71 fig. 4.7
