Apatosaurus dinosaur, artwork. Apatosaurus was a long-necked herbivore that belonged to a group of dinosaurs called sauropods. It lived around 150- 140 million years ago in what is now southern North America. Apatosaurus reached a length of about 20 metres and weighed about 30 tonnes, but had a tiny brain. It lived in herds and mainly ate coniferous plants. This dinosaur is commonly known by its previous but incorrect name Brontosaurus (meaning 'deceptive lizard') or, Thunder Lizard.
