Caption: Tetrapods. Computer artwork of three tetrapods swimming. The first tetrapods evolved from lobe- finned fish in the late Devonian period, about 360 million years ago. They inhabited shallow swampy areas and developed legs to walk and paddle on swamp bottoms. By the beginning of the Carboniferous period that followed, some tetrapods had become adapted to life on land.
