Caption: Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur. Artwork of Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) running. This was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, measuring 5 metres tall and weighing 7 tonnes. It lived in North America and Asia during the late Cretaceous period, between 85 and 65 million years ago. A predator and scavenger, T. rex had the strongest bite of any dinosaur, with teeth that could penetrate bone. With such a heavy body, it is estimated that T. rex was only able to run at speeds of 16-40 kilometres per hour. Such a slow speed would not be fast enough to catch smaller, faster prey, hence T. rex may have mainly scavenged for food.
