Caption: Light micrograph of mature wood of the Pinus Silvestris or Scots Pine, in radial longitudinal section stained to show tracheids with pits. The tracheids are seen stained green/yellow, standing out from the blue-coloured parenchyma tissues. At the ends of the tracheid cells may be seen pits in the cell wall. Aligned with pits in adjacent cells and seperated only by a membrane, these pits form the only pathway for water to be transported up the tree from the roots. Almost all of the secondary xylem in the Coniferales order is made from tracheids, providing structural support as well as a water pathway. Magnification 50x at 35mm size.
