Caption: Male and female cones of the Nikko fir, Abies homolepis. The cones are the tree's reproductive structures. The male cones (the brown structures hanging under the branches) are small & short- lived, & bear the pollen. The female or ovulate cones (purplish black) are larger & require considerably longer to reach maturity. They are covered with white drops of resin. Large quantities of pollen produced by the male cones are dispersed by the wind.
