Caption: Female cones of the Nikko fir, Abies homolepis. The cones are the tree's reproductive structures. The female or ovulate cones seen here are large & require considerably longer to reach maturity than male cones. They are covered with white drops of resin. Male cones (brown structures which hang underneath the branches) are small and short- lived, bearing large quantities of pollen which is dispersed by the wind.
