Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through the petiole of a leaf of the maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba. The species is the only represent- ative still existing of the ancient family Ginkgoales. The leaves are unique among trees in that the venation consists of a constantly branching fan, spreading outward from the petiole. The centre of the petiole is occupied by two vascular bundles (butterfly-shaped region) each one made up of a group of xylem tracheids (bluish green) and a group of phloem elements (white). These are surrounded by a pericycle (white, large- celled layer) & a layer of endodermis (bluish green). Magnification unknown.
