Caption: Mammoth bone hut. Reconstruction of a hut made from bones and tusks of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). It is almost entirely composed of mammoth bones, except for some wooden branches and supporting struts. The entrance comprises two upturned skulls with one tusk in each, forming the arch. Around the base of the hut are limb bones, and on the top are curved rib bones. A covering of mammoth skin (not seen) would have completed the hut. This hut dates from between 45,000 and 10,000 years ago in the Palaeolithic period (Stone Age). It was found in Mezhirich in the Ukraine.
