Mammoth leg (Mammuthus sp.). This leg was found preserved in permafrost in Berelekh, eastern Siberia, Russia. Its soft tissues and wool are largely intact and it is being displayed in the Yakutsk geological museum. Mammoths are an elephant-like mammal which inhabited northern regions of the world and became extinct only a few thousand years ago. Many similar bodies have been found elsewhere preserved in permafrost. In 1970 alone, around 8000 bones from 120 mammoths were extracted from the Berelekh site.
