Caption: Mammoth bone carvings, from a Cro-magnon settlement in Ukraine. The carvings include a map, clothes pins, and human figures. Cro-magnon Man lived between 45,000 and 10,000 years ago. He was anatomically very similar to modern man. Mammoths (Mammuthus sp.) are an elephant-like mammal which inhabited northern regions of the world and became extinct only a few thousand years ago.
