Caption: Mammoth evolutionary migration. Artwork showing the evolution and migration of mammoth species over millions of years. Starting in Africa from 4.8 to 3 million years ago, the mammoth spread to Europe and central Asia (2.6 to 0.7 million years ago), to India (0.7 to 0.3 million years ago), Siberia (350,000 to 3,700 years ago) and North America (1.2 to 0.2 million years ago). A dwarf species of mammoth survived the last Ice Age (20,000 years ago), and was found in California up until 13,500 years ago. All these mammoth species are now extinct.
