Caption: Mammoth researchers outside a hut at an excavation site in Siberia in January 1902. Mammoths were a species of giant, hairy, elephant-like mammals that went extinct around the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Some of their remains, preserved deep in the frozen tundra by the cold Siberian climate, have been uncovered by excavations. The first such excavations took place in the late 19th century. This site is near the Berezovka River, in the Republic of Sakhia (Yakutia), Russia.
