Caption: Rock art. Image 2 of 3. Reconstruction of methods of prehistoric rock art. A natural red pigment, such as ochre, was heated and applied to the rock wall of a cave. This could then be used to paint scenes of animals and other objects. Handprints have been found that are tens of thousands of years old. These are thought to be linked to magic and religion, with a shaman leaving his handprint on the rock to signify unification with, and power over, the natural world. For a sequence showing a reconstruction of cave painting handprinting, see images E448/087-089.
