Caption: Juniper ovules. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of a transverse section through a female cone of a Juniper tree, Juniperus sp., revealing fertilized ovules. The two fertilized ovules (at centre and at right) contain embryos that will develop into seeds. Juniperus sp. belongs to a group of plants called gymnosperms, meaning 'naked seeds', that produce their ovules under scales on the outside of the female cone. The exposed ovules are accessible to wind-borne pollen from male cones, which falls between the covering of cone's scales and fertilizes them. Differential interference contrast. Magnification: x45 at 6x7cm size. Magnification; x92 at 4x5" size.
