Caption: Maidenhair tree. Autumn leaves on the branches of a maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba). The tree is the only living representative of the family Ginkgoaceae. Its two-lobed leaf is unique among trees in having a fan of veins that branches up from the base of the leaf, instead of a central vein, or midrib. The yellow leaf colour is due to the loss of the green chlorophyll pigment normally found in the leaves. This tree is native to China.
