Caption: Weathered pebble. A close-up of a desert pebble undergoing 'onion skin' weathering or exfoliation. The pebble (at centre) is shedding its outer layers. This type of weathering is found in deserts and other areas of temperature extremes. In desert rocks, the strain of contraction during the cold nights and expansion during the hot days gradually weakens the rocks' outer layers. Eventually these outer layers break off altogether. Photographed near the Sarbaz River, Baluchistan, Iran.
