Caption: Dioon edule fronds. Close-up of the fronds of the cycad Dioon edule. Cycads are ancient, primitive plants, fossilised representatives of the group dating back 300 million years. The fronds are long and stiff, widest at the middle and tapering at both ends. D. edule is a native of Mexico and is well adapted to life in dry conditions. It is now widely cultivated as an ornamental in Europe.
