Caption: Earth pillar. Earth pillar erosion feature. This type of feature is also known as a demoiselle. The pillar is made of soft sedimentary rock, and it is topped by a flat cap of harder rock. Occasional heavy rains erode much of the pillar, but the neck is protected by the hard rock above it. Such structures are common in semi-arid areas, such as in these badlands in Utah, USA.
