Caption: Breadpalm cone. Cone of a breadpalm (Encephalartos longifolius) amid a crown of leaves. This is one of the largest of cones and can measure up to 60 centimetres in height. Breadpalms are cycads found in South Africa. The cone tops a 3 metre high trunk crowned with leaves. Cycads are an ancient and primitive group of plants. They are gymnosperms and produce 'naked seeds' or ovules under the scales of the cones of the female plant.
