Caption: Granite erosion. Several hollows, or tafoni, in granite caused by erosion. Tafoni are caused by exfoliation, which occurs when water penetrates cracks in the rock. Salts dissolved in the water crystallise, causing flaking and splitting of the rock's surface. The rock inside the hollows seen here has a flaky appearance due to this process. Photographed in Corsica, France.
