Caption: Eroded sandstone. Aerial photograph of eroded sandstone showing polygonal jointing. This erosion pattern of fissures was caused by extreme local differences in temperature. Rapid, repeated changes from very hot during the day to very cold at night produced tension in the sandstone, which, lacking protective ground cover, developed surface cracks. These cracks were deepened by wind and rain over time to form the channels seen. Photographed in the Paria Wilderness, Utah, USA.
