Caption: Eroded sandstone. Canyons carved by erosion into de Chelly sandstone. The stone seen here was formed by the deposition of successive layers of wind-borne sediment, which later compressed into rock. The sandstone was laid down during the Permian period, over 200 million years ago. Since then, the flow of rivers over the rock has formed many deep canyons and gulleys. Photographed in the Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona, USA.
