Caption: Uluru (Ayers Rock). Road leading to Uluru, or Ayers Rock, in the Uluru National Park, Northern Territory, Australia. Uluru is a large monolith composed of arkosic sandstone. Measuring 3.5 kilometres in length, 2 kilometres wide and 335 metres tall, it is probably the largest monolith in the world. The sandstone appears to change colour according to the position of the Sun in the sky. Shallow caves at the base of Uluru are sacred to several Aboriginal tribes and contain carvings and paintings.
