Caption: Landsat image of the Persian Gulf (left) and the Strait of Hormuz (far right). The peninsula of land jutting into the Strait is Oman. The lobe of land at lower centre of the image is Qatar, with the small island of Bahrain to its left. The coastline to the right of Qatar is called the Trucial Coast and the land facing it consists of the United Arab Emirates. On the opposite side of the Arabian Peninsula is Iran. The large island to the right is Qeshm and behind, on the mainland, are the folded rock structures of the Zagros Mountains.
