Caption: The Himalayan Mountains, seen from Space Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS-29. The range is covered in snow, Mount Everest is just out of frame to the right. Above the line of the Himalayas is the Tibetan Plain, a cold region at around 4,000 metres altitude, largely without vegetation. Below the line of the mountains is the fertile Ganges plain. Mission STS-29 was launched on 13 March 1989, making a safe return to Earth on 18 March 1989.
