This image is part of the feature Christoph Hormann's Views Of The Earth

Credit: CHRISTOPH HORMANN/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Alborz mountains, 3D computer image, viewed at an altitude of 59 kilometres. The Alborz Mountain range separates the Iranian plateau from the Caspian Sea. Sefid River (centre middle to far left) crosses through the mountains and enters into the Caspian Sea near the city of Rasht. This image was created by Christoph Hormann using data obtained from satellites such as Landsat and SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission). The data was processed into computer models using three-dimensional rendering software and then coloured and distorted to mimic the natural curvature of the Earth.
