This image is part of the feature Space Radar - Srtm

Credit: NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Canyons in Colorado. Coloured three-dimensional computer map of canyons (branching) in southern Colorado, USA. North is at top. The topography of the region was mapped by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, using reflected radar pulses. Colour- coding reveals elevation: blue and green areas are lowest, rising through yellow and brown to white, the highest. The Pinon Canyon is seen at upper centre, with the larger Purgatoire Canyon to its east. The Spanish Peak Mountains (brown) rise to around 2100 metres. SRTM is run by NASA, the USA's National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), and the German and Italian space agencies.
