Fjardara Canyon in Iceland. This steep-sided gorge has been formed by the downward erosion of lava deposits by the river in the valley bottom. This region of south-eastern Iceland is characterized by a landscape of black tuff or tuffstone, formed by the accumulation and compaction of volcanic ash following a volcanic eruption.
