Caption: Light micrograph of the surface of a sheet of gold leaf, photographed using differential interference contrast (DIC). DIC is a technique used for visualising small changes in a metallic surface. The light from a lamp passes through a polariser, then through a prism which splits the beam, rotating one half by 90 degrees. After reflection at the sample surface, the beams are recombined by a second prism and interfere before passing through a second polariser. This produces the colours seen here. Magnification x30 at 6x4.5cm size.
