Caption: Shuttle photograph of the White Nile (large river near the bottom) and the Blue Nile (smaller meandering river near the top) at their confluence near Khartoum in Sudan. The patchwork appearance of the land between the rivers is in fact irrigated cultivated land. In this photograph, taken during mission STS-26 in September 1988, the rivers show evidence of recent overbank flooding. The line across the river at lower right is the White Nile Dam. Past orbital photography has shown the riverbed below this dam and the converging tributary as being almost dry.
