River Senegal. Coloured satellite view of part of the River Senegal, West Africa. The river is the border between the desert sands of Mauritania (top) and the savanna of Senegal. At this point the river opens out into a delta-like plain with numerous sub-channels and lakes. The large red patches at right are crops in irrigated fields, the black fields being bare moist soil. In the bottom right is Lac du Guier. The striated appearance of the desert (top) is due to linear depressions and ridges, with rough desert grasses (brown) covering some of the sand (yellow). SPOT is a French Earth observation satellite.
