Caption: Meandering river. Aerial photograph of a series of loops and bends along the Green River, in the Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA. The valley through which the river flows has resulted from thousands of years of erosion. Water flowing around the outside of slight bends flows faster and therefore erodes the river bank faster, resulting in the loops seen. There is a tendency for rivers to eventually cut off a loop, leaving an ox-bow lake. Although not yet formed, a possible cut off may occur at upper left.
