Caption: Landsat photograph of the Yangtze delta and Shanghai, on the east coast of China. The Yangtze is China's longest river. The swirls of blue and beige are areas of off-shore sediment indicating that the delta is still growing. The three main islands in the river mouth, Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha, have been created from such depos- ition of sand & silt. Shanghai appears as a brown smudge on the dark blue Huangpu River in the lower part of the image. The area shown here is highly cultivated, & the networks of fine blue & white lines are irrigation canals. Notice regions of man-made coastline (top) with salt-pans (black).
