Caption: Amazon Delta, seen from space. View of the vast estuary and delta of the Amazon River, in Para State, Brazil. The river runs northward from bottom centre. To the east, filling most of the right of the frame, is Ilha de Marajo, an island of about 40,000 square kilometres. Note the extensive sedimentation in the estaury, hugging the coast to the north west (left). This is due to the prevailing Guyana Current in the Atlantic Ocean. This scene was photographed by the crew of Shuttle Atlantis during Mission STS-46 of 31 July to 8 August 1992.
