Caption: Bombetoka Estuary. Coloured SPOT-1 satellite image of the heavily silted Bombetoka Estuary, Madagas- car. North is at the top. Vegetation appears red, water blue-green, bare earth white. The Bombetoka is the outlet of the River Betsiboka. The water, carrying enormous quantities of sediment (light green) flows northwest into the Indian Ocean. Is- lands of silt have formed in the Estuary, with mangrove swamps (red) around their edges. In the surrounding land native forest (red) has mostly been cut down and replaced with crops such as rice (bare fields black, flooded fields blue). Image taken by the French satellite SPOT-1, August.
