River estuaries, USA, infrared satellite image. North is at top. This region of coastline is just east of Houston, Texas. Coastal bays and lakes are formed by rivers that also bring silt (light blue) to the Gulf of Mexico (black, across bottom). The three main bays and lake, from left to right, are: Galveston Bay, Sabine Lake and Calcasieu Lake. The vegetation on the surrounding flood plains ranges from luxuriant (red) to sparse (white) to wetlands (green). This 180-kilometre-wide image was taken on 19 January 1973, in visible and infrared wavelengths, with the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) sensor on NASA's Landsat 1 satellite.
